STAN SAKAI

Stan Sakai was born in Kyoto, Japan, but grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii. He began his career in comics by writing Groo the Wanderer, from Sergio Aragonés. Sakai also worked with Stan Lee, writing the newspaper strips off Spider-Man Sunday for 25 years. It is best known for its creation original Usagi Yojimbo, an epic saga that began in 1984 and spans now more than 38 volumes.

Features Miyamoto Usagi, a samurai rabbit from the Usagi was published in eighteen languages, and Sakai was published in eighteen languages honored with numerous awards, including twelve Eisner Awards, two Harvey Awards (including one for Best Cartoonist), the Cultural Ambassador Award of the Japanese American National Museum, one Parents’ Choice Award, two Awards from the Silver Reubens National Society of Cartoonists, three Starr and an award from the American Library Association. The skillful combination of Japanese history, folklore and culture in his work has made Usagi Yojimbo a favorite among educators, as a tool Curriculum.

Usagi was also a part of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in their television, comic book crossovers and toy lines. In partnership with Gaumont Studios, Sakai, James Wan (creator of the production company Atomic Monster) and Dark Horse Entertainment created Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles, for Netflix. Stan is married to artist Julie Fujii-Sakai, with whom he collaborated on the winner Eisner Award, Chibi Usagi and the Heebie Chibis Attack. In 2021, Sakai was inducted into the Eisner Hall of Fame.
