Juan Díaz Canales (born in Madrid in 1972), after finishing high school, trained as an illustrator at the now-defunct animation studio Lápiz Azul. He then enrolled at the Complutense University of Madrid, where he studied Fine Arts. In 1996, he founded the Tridente Animación studio with three colleagues, with whom he worked for ten years on television series and feature films.

During these early years of his artistic training, he met Juanjo Guarnido and with him decided to present a project in France: “Blacksad”, a detective comic starring a detective cat.

The first book in the series was published by Dargaud in 2000 and was followed by five instalments of the character, published in Spain by Norma Editorial. “Amarillo”, the fifth volume of the saga, was awarded the Premio Nacional de Cómic in 2014. The series has become a worldwide bestseller, translated into more than twenty languages and has won some of the most prestigious prizes in the sector, such as the Eisner Award, the Alpha Art in Angoulême and the Barcelona Comic Fair Award.

In 2016, Díaz Canales published his first comic book with his own script and drawing, entitled “Como viaja el agua” (Astiberri Publishing).

At the same time, Díaz Canales has developed several projects with other cartoonists, including “Fraternidad”, drawn by José Luis Munuera, Gentlemind, written with Teresa Valero and drawn by Antonio Lapone. His latest work “Judee Sill”, was drawn by Jesús Alonso Iglesias.

In addition, since 2015, he has formed a creative team with cartoonist Rubén Pellejero for the new adventures of Corto Maltés, Hugo Pratt’s mythical persona, of which he has already published four books.
